The annual electronic waste and paper shredding event in Covington reported significantly higher collections than the previous year. The 2020 drop-off event, organized by Keep Covington Beautiful, was held Saturday, August 29 from 10 AM to 1 PM at parking lot outside Holmes High School.
According to the organizers of the event, a total of 398 cars dropped off materials this year, nearly three times as compared with 160 cars during the previous year. The 2020 event collected 31,182 pounds of computers, televisions and other electronics. This compares with 9,291 pounds collected in 2019. The collection of documents for shredding increased from around 10,000 pounds last year to nearly 11,000 pounds in 2020. In addition, around 400 pounds of cardboard were also collected.
The collected electronic devices will be disassembled and recycled by Cleanlites, whereas the confidential documents will be shredded and turned out into new paper by the NAID-certified Shred-It USA LLC.
Stephanie Bacher, Covington’s Solid Waste & Recycling Supervisor commented that it is encouraged by the growing participation. It looks to expand the frequency of the events and to include more toxic and problematic materials in the list of accepted items in future, Bacher added.
