Waste circuit boards contain a variety of metals—most notably copper—as well as gold, aluminum, lead, silicon, and various rare metals. Waste circuit board recycling equipment is specifically designed to process these discarded boards, separating and recovering the mixed metals and resin powder contained within them; it is also commonly referred to as electronic waste (e-waste) recycling and processing equipment.
Due to variations in the raw materials being processed, waste circuit board crushing and sorting systems are available in different configurations. A standard system typically consists of a shredder, a crusher, a gyratory vibrating screen, an airflow gravity separator, and an electrostatic separator; this specific configuration is utilized for processing "bare boards"—circuit boards that have had their electronic components removed.
For circuit boards that still retain their electronic components, the system requires the addition of a dedicated circuit board dismantling machine. The primary function of this unit is to detach the electronic components—such as resistors and capacitors—from the circuit boards. If these components are not removed prior to processing, they will negatively impact the sorting efficiency and recovery rate of the crushing and sorting equipment.
Once the waste circuit boards have been processed by the system, the output consists of a mixture of metals and resin fibers. The mixed metals can be sold directly on the metal trading market, or they can undergo further processing for gold extraction or metal purification. The resin fibers can be utilized to manufacture materials such as wood-plastic composites, outdoor benches, and flooring, or they can serve as filler material for various wood-plastic products.
