The necessity of recycling solar panel components

The lifespan of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules can generally reach 25-30 years in an ideal environment. However, in actual applications, due to environmental erosion and ultraviolet radiation, circuit aging, sealant degradation, and electrochemical corrosion are prone to occur in the modules. Problems such as these have resulted in an actual service life of about 20 years. In addition, a large number of distributed photovoltaics will be scrapped early as the buildings are demolished. It is estimated that the global scrapped photovoltaic modules will reach 10 million tons by 2030. China's photovoltaic market began to develop rapidly around 2010, and it is expected that there will be a large number of "decommissionings" in the next 10 years. Improper disposal of waste photovoltaic modules will bring a heavy burden to the environment and society, and the recycling and reuse of photovoltaic modules is imminent.

Currently, photovoltaic modules are mainly crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules. The components include glass, packaging materials, silicon wafers, backsheets and metal frames, of which glass (about 70%), aluminum (about 10%), silicon (about 5%) ), silver, gallium, indium and other rare metals (about 1%) have the possibility of recycling. Through the recycling and reuse of waste photovoltaic modules, rare metals, glass, aluminum, semiconductors and other materials can be recycled to achieve the purpose of mitigating the exploitation of primary resources, reducing the energy consumption of resource refining, and achieving low-carbon development.
