The annual Facts and Figures report published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests that newly published report on global e-waste recycling in the country increased in 2018, after reporting decline for many years in a row.
The recycling rate for 2018 stood at 38.5%. The rate had hit a high of 41.7% in 2014, followed by two straight years of decline. The rate had remained flat at 35.9% in 2017. The marginal increase in recovery, coupled with a decline in e-waste generation, accounted for the marginal jump in recycling rate, U.S. EPA said. The CRT devices continued to account for a large portion of the recycling stream.
According to the report, a total of 5.40 billion pounds of electronic devices were generated by U.S. consumers in 2018. Out of this, only 2.08 billion pounds were recovered for recycling. This compares with 5.68 billion pounds generated and 2.04 billion pounds of devices recovered in 2017.
The EPA report is based on generation and recovery of selected consumer electronics that includes various devices such as televisions, VCRs, DVD players, video cameras, stereo systems, telephones and computer equipment.
The overall recycling and composting rate in 2018, at 32.1%, was down from 35.2% in the prior year.
