CIAC Responds to Integrated Plastics Management Approach

The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) has published its response to the proposed integrated management approach to plastic products. It has decided to provide advice to the federal government with regards to the proposed legislation.

According to CIAC, it does not consider the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), 1999 as an appropriate tool for managing post-consumer plastic waste. At the same time, it extended support for a national waste legislation that focuses on advancing a circular economy for plastics in the country.

The association expressed its concerns over banning certain products solely because they are improperly managed at end of use. The aim should be to modernize and advance recycling systems and ensure proper management of all plastic products after use.

The government should allow sufficient time for consultations with industry and provincial administrations. The timing of addition of “manufactured plastic items” to Schedule 1 must be delayed at least until the end of the public consultation on its Discussion Paper. CIAC noted that plastic producers in the country have been taking important actions to address plastic waste on land.

CIAC extended support to government’s efforts to transition to a circular economy for plastics, while maintaining thousands of jobs supported by the sector.
