A new campaign was launched in Thailand to boost e-waste collection and recycling. The campaign, titled ‘AIS E-Waste, Dispose for Points’, was launched Wednesday by Advanced Info Service (AIS) and will run until 31st October this year.
According to company news release, the campaign urges customers to drop off five main types of electronic waste at its shops- mobile phones or tablets, mobile phone batteries, chargers, headphones and power banks. The customers who drop the above items at shops will receive AIS Points, which could then be redeemed for goods and services. Each waste item will earn five points. Furthermore, one mobile number could receive up to 10 points per day, the release said.
The customers are required to wipe out data and images from their phones or tablets before handing it over to the collection desk. Also, memory cards must be removed from handsets. The mobile batteries or power banks with blisters or discoloration on them must be soaked in water for at least five hours to reduce their energy charge and wrapped in bag or paper.
Since 2016, AIS has collected and disposed of nearly 710 tonnes of electronic waste from across the country. It must be noted that Thailand had produced over 620,000 metric tonnes of e-waste in 2019.
