Germany-based Bundesvereinigung Deutscher Stahlrecycling und Entsorgungsunternehmen e.V. (BDSV) has called for more flexibility in collection of discarded electronics items. It noted that active support by private sector scrap recyclers could lead to notable improvement in electronics scrap collection and recycling rates in the country.
The Association noted that the task of collection of old electronic appliances from German households is being assigned to the electrical trade and public waste disposal companies. Although the method offers a local and appropriate disposal option to citizens, it is quite doubtful that the country will be able to achieve the e-waste collection quota set by the European Union (EU).
There have been repeated complaints from customers that the municipal recycling centers are not easily accessible to them or are having unfavourable working hours. This could lead to customers illegally disposing many of their devices. As a solution to this, private scrap companies must be allowed to accept old devices for initial treatment. This could multiply the number of collection points, which in turn could boost the collection rate of devices, especially large electrical appliances.
